About The Monster

The monster was conceived in June of 2007 when a Powhatan County resident proposed giving birth to a small disc golf course in the planned Powhatan State Park. With the economy growing worse and funds for the project cut, the park came to a halt, and with it, the course.

In 2008 the disc golf proposal was dusted off and presented to the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors for use in a county park. The proposal was tabled until a Parks & Recreation Director could be hired.

2009 brought to Powhatan County its first Director of Parks & Recreation, Kevin Myers. Mr. Myers was an extremely pro-active director who jumped on the proposal and within just four months of his hiring date course equipment was ordered. Eighteen Innova DisCatcher targets arrived and soon after, Kevin Myers with his part-time assistant, Lynne Siewers, were seen traversing the park with eighty-pound bags of concrete and a pickup truck scraping the ground due to the weight of the equipment loaded on it.

The Monster at Fighting Creek is now installed with eighteen holes and practice basket. Course improvements are planned for the coming months so please check the status report for updates.

Directions:

Fighting Creek Park is located in Powhatan County, Virginia, very close to the Courthouse area. Within the park are the county's YMCA, library, National Guard Armory, and sports fields.

Although there are several local roads that would bring you to the general area of the park from the North or South, such as Route 522, 609, or 604, the following two versions of travel directions will be applicable to most out-of-town visitors:

From The North or South - Take Route 288 to Route 60 West (also known as Midlothian Turnpike). Follow Midlothian Turnpike for approximately 2.7 miles. As you enter Powhatan County the road name will change to James A. Anderson Highway. Continue West for 11 miles. Turn left onto Mann Road. At the Stop Sign you will see the park entrance straight across the intersection. The course practice basket is located adjacent to the library parking lot less than 1/10 mile beyond the Stop Sign.

From The West - Take Route 60 East (also known as James A. Anderson Highway). After passing Route 522 continue on Route 60 for approximately 1 mile (11 miles East of the Cumberland County line). Turn right onto Mann Road. At the Stop Sign you will see the park entrance straight across the intersection. The course practice basket is located adjacent to the library parking lot less than 1/10 mile beyond the Stop Sign.
