Status Report: (11-26-11)
Fairways:
The course has all eighteen Innova DisCatcher targets installed with a practice basket near the library parking area. The first twelve holes are generally open fairways while the last six are wooded. All fairways are in good condition and ready for the winter season.
The fairways are marked by bright pink paint on the trees. Following the marks will guide you from tee to basket.
Basket 8 is due to be moved to the opposite side of the fairway. Please note that the sign already indicates the change. The basket is in sight of the tee, however, and there should be no confusion for the play.
Please do not make changes to the course without the permission of the County Parks Director. Private property lines are not always marked and the alterations could become criminal actions. Volunteers are always welcome, however, organized and authorized work is the better plan. Unauthorized alterations could result in criminal charges for those responsible and removal of the course due to private property / easement infringements.
Tees:
A long tee position is marked throughout the course. Short tees will be marked as time permits. Tee signs do display a short tee position from which the golfer can estimate the area.
Signs:
All tee signs have been installed with the exception of tee 16. Sign 16 was printed in error and must be replaced. A post is installed at the tee position. Once the tee signs are in place we hope to obtain funding for a large welcome sign adjacent to Tee 1 as well as a picnic area half way through the course.
Amenities:
Golfers may now use the library for restrooms. The library also provides free wireless Internet as well as couches and tables to relax in or research from. During sporting events additional restrooms will be available in the baseball field area. YMCA members may utilize the facilities located across the street from the library. The YMCA provides free use of their golf discs to members. Benches and picnic tables are planned to be placed on the course.
Safety:
Locations to obtain assistance are available along the course. Most holes are close to the library and YMCA. Hole seven is about 350 yards West of a rescue squad building. Hole seven is close to the water treatment plant. County law enforcement is provided by the Powhatan County Sheriff's Office, (804-598-5656), and the Virginia State Police (804-553-3445).
